Tips on Tuesday

Did you know that you can use ketchup to clean tarnished copper?  I didn't until a few weeks before Christmas.  One of our volunteers at the Center brought a copper bottomed skillet into the kitchen to clean it up.  It had been donated to the Center's resale shop, but it was nasty!!!  Why do people do that?  Why wouldn't they take the time to at least wash it before giving it away?  That, ladies and gentlemen is pure out L.A.Z.Y!  My motto when it comes to donating items is this...if it is broken, stained, torn or no longer functions in its original capacity....THROW IT AWAY!  If it is something you no longer find stylish/attractive, if it is too small/too big, if you upgrade to a more recent model and it is still in good working order, give it away.

So, my friend places the skillet in the sink and puts a bit of warm water in the pan.  She sprinkles enough salt and baking soda to make a paste and proceeds to scrub all of the burnt on junk out of the skillet.  It was beautiful!  I knew about the trick with salt and soda but when she turned the pan over and asked for ketchup to scrub the bottom, well...my jaw hit the floor.  She squirted a bit of ketchup onto the bottom and began to polish in a slow, circular motion.  She sprinkled a little salt just for a bit of abrasiveness and I watched as the tarnish began to slowly disappear.  She rinsed off what she had worked loose and then applied a little more of the Heinz and let it sit.  When she came back, she worked some salt into the ketchup and started the polishing and even more of the tarnish came off.  After the second time of polishing, she just about had that skillet looking brand new.  I was flabbergasted!

It got me to thinking....how many times does God take an unlikely person and use him/her for His glory?  How often does God use circumstances, events that are beyond human comprehension to prove just how powerful He truly is?  The examples are ENDLESS!  David, Moses, Esther, Rahab, Ruth, Boaz, Joshua and Caleb, Saul/Paul.  Each one of these individuals were flawed, dented, scratched, scared and tarnished.  Instead of passing them over because of their imperfections, God used them just as they were to do great things that gave testimony to His might and greatness.

So...how about a little spiritual ketchup?
