(NOT) Knowing It All

Riddle me this:  why do we walk around on this good Earth pretending to know it all?  WHAT is that?!

I'll tell you what it is....arrogant, prideful, deluded, misguided, WRONG, ridiculous, ludicrous, rude and sad!  John's Gospel says, "In the beginning, was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God."  Ain't nothing in that verse that says "In the beginning was Michelle and the Word and the Word was with Michelle and God and the Word was Michelle and God."  Child, please! I wasn't there at the beginning.  Shoot, human kind didn't even grace creation until the sixth day.  (BTW, I've always thought it was funny that God had to take a day off after creating Adam and Eve!)  Perhaps it should come as small comfort to know that we've been like this from the get-go.  You know...God said not to eat from THAT tree because we'd die...stupid serpent said we wouldn't die but that we'd be as smart as God...stupid Eve took a bite and then so did stupid Adam and look where it got us!

A new friend of mine shared some wisdom she learned at her daddy's knee...those who will not hear, must feel.  I'll repeat that...those who will not hear must feel.  Adam and Eve wouldn't hear the warning, so they had to feel the repercussions of their pride and disobedience.  So WE have to feel the repercussions of theirs and ours.  DOUBLE WHAMMY!  Why is it so hard for us to listen and absorb the wisdom offered to us?  Our resistance to wise counsel boarders on pathological!  And when I say "wise counsel, " I'm not talking about folks with book learning...although, that is important and has it's place in life.  I'm talking about folks who could sell the t-shirts because they've been there, done that and more importantly, SURVIVED...both the going and the doing!  Now, I realize that there are some life lessons that are best learned by walking through the fire.  Not every lesson comes at that price but somewhere along the way, we've lost our ability...outright ignored it...to tell the difference.

We are human.  We are flawed.  We are fallible.  (I know...some of you are offended by those statements.  You'll be okay.  Take a deep breath...let it out.)  Humanity wasn't designed to bear the weight of the universe's questions.  We are WAAAAY to flawed for that.  Sometimes the smartest thing you can do...instead of acting like you have all the answers (and looking like a complete bone-head for it)...is to say, "I don't know."
